Finding Your Community in Campus Involvement: Lauren’s Guide to Student Organizations and Involvements

Hey Knights! As students are getting busier with classes ramping up in the last half of the semester, many students are beginning to settle in with homework and campus jobs. It’s easy for campus involvement to be put on the back burner.

Being involved on campus, whether that is through athletics, music or different student organizations can help students build community, establish connections and bring change to our campus. There are many different organizations on campus and my goal is to help spark your interest in getting connected to another aspect of student life on campus.

Get involved within an academic field.

One easy way to get involved on campus is to join a student organization within your field of study. These organizations can provide opportunities to grow in your future profession and build connections within your academic community.

Interested in an organization related to another major? Don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of that group. Oftentimes, organizations related to a specific field still allow members from other areas of study to join.

Engage in Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry.

Finding ways to get involved with your spiritual journey or campus ministry can help you find a group of friends who share similar beliefs as you. These organizations typically work with Chaplain Maggie to bring connection and ministry to students across different beliefs.

Involving yourself with those with common beliefs as well as being receptive and open to conversations with those of other faiths can create an interfaith community. These groups can typically help work to diminish the stigma around different faiths in our community and work to make change through promoting ministry and community.

Advocate and share information with the Wartburg community through student media.

Many students on campus are involved in student media. These students work in various organizations across campus to spread information on Wartburg news, sports, music and more. There is no requirement with a major to get involved in student media.

Take a chance and apply for a student leadership opportunity on campus.

There are many opportunities to boost your leadership skills while at Wartburg. Getting involved in campus leadership is a great way to make new connections and grow as a person. Students at Wartburg have the opportunity to engage in different leadership experiences such as Ambassadors, as a Resident Assistant, Peer Mentor and Orientation Staff.

These groups allow you the opportunity to engage with the Wartburg community in a new way and see campus from a new perspective. Working in these organizations can provide you with connections that can not only help you grow relationships with new students on campus but also other student leaders looking to make a difference.

These organizations provide opportunities to get paid as a student worker while making a difference in the community. Students interested in these leadership opportunities should apply as applications open. Ambassadors is currently hiring for the second semester, and other positions will be open for applications during second semester.

Look for opportunities to serve your community.

Organizations like Warburg Service Trips, Service Dog Club, Entertainment To Knight (ETK), Dance Marathon and EARTH Club provide opportunities to be involved in the community and working to make a difference on campus, in the Waverly community and surrounding area.

These organizations provide opportunities to take your passion and drive for change to different areas and invest into something greater. Opportunities to engage in community and service-based organizations can provide you with a sense of fulfillment and bring you a sense of accomplishment while also providing you with a group of peers that support you.

Engage in groups that embrace different cultures and identities.

Alliance, Latino Hispanic Heritage Society (LHHS), Black Student Union (BSU), Asian Student Association and the African Heritage Collective and International Club (I-Club) are organizations that embrace community by promoting different communities.

All students are welcome to these organizations’ events. It can be a great place to immerse yourself in a new community. These groups allow students to learn more about the cultures and identities they can find on campus and allow students to speak about who they are.

Join an organization that speaks to your favorite hobbies.

Sometimes the best way to get involved and find your community on campus is by finding an organization that sounds fun and exciting. Finding a group on campus that resonates with you and your personality does not have to be something that seems out of reach or comfort zone! Understanding your interests and how they can relate to different student organizations on campus can allow you to quickly connect with new people on campus.

Wartburg has over seventy student organizations on campus for students to be a part of! Campus involvement is important to create a personal community on campus. Organizations and other campus involvements allow you to not only meet new people but connect with new faculty members and engage with the Wartburg community.
