Letters of Love is a national organization that aims to support children battling serious illnesses by creating kind messages and cards. There are over 300 Letters of Love high school and college programs, and students at Wartburg are slowly working to establish a program.

Letters of Love President is second-year student Abi Peyman. She wanted to start the organization at Wartburg after seeing students at other colleges have positive experiences.

“I think that anything we can do to be able to support kids who need that extra support is super cool,” says Peyman.

Peyman started the process with Letters of Love during May Term of the 2024-25 academic year. Due to a short waiting list, Peyman found out that Wartburg could start a program over the summer.

After applying for the program, Peyman started to contact students on campus to gain interest. Once she received official notice from the national Letters of Love organization, she started contacting specific individuals to form an executive team.

“[The team] is me, Ellie Martinez and Brooke Bloom, and then Cole Wiemers,” says Peyman.

Peyman’s goal was to create a diverse leadership team. Through their variety of majors, sports and outside interests, the team hopes to reach a variety of individuals.

Letters of Love Vice President is second-year Ellie Martinez share that she was eager to join the team after talking to Peyman.

“It [allows you] to take a break from your day,” says Martinez, “You sit there, you make a little card for a sick kiddo in the hospital, and just knowing that one small, little act of kindness that took you twenty minutes could brighten their entire day.”

Peyman and Martinez share that they are excited to grow this program and get students on campus involved within the program. They hope to collaborate with organizations such as  Dance Marathon to bridge the gap between organizations.

The executive team started the application process and is currently waiting for revisions from Student Senate for their constitution before moving forward. Their goal is to have their first event prior to the end of the first semester.

“[Events] will probably be like, a two-hour block of time somewhere around campus and people can stop by and they can make one card, they can make as many as they want,” says Peyman.
