Kreativwerkstatt, also known as Makerspace or K-Statt is a space where students can make their creative concepts come to life. Located on the second floor of Vogel Library, the materials are free for students to use.
“[It’s] mostly a place for them to be creative, to get the creative juices flowing. To produce things that are difficult to explain in words is how I like to think of it, because sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words,” says Julie Fedeler, evening supervisor of Vogel Library and supervisor of the K-Statt.
Over the summer, the K-Statt underwent renovations as it merged with the creative space once located in the Hub. Fedeler says this process prompted some reorganization of resources.
“I took everything that we had in here, put it into boxes for the move, and then as we put everything back out and took time to get it better organized,” says Fedeler. “Now we have a craft space, places for paper, type crafting and working paint on the fair side.”
The K-Statt space concept was initially a solution to an underutilized space in the library. Funds were used initially to purchase a button maker, sewing machine and Cricut machine.
The space has since expanded, including knitting tools, embroidery items and a die cutting machine. Also available are paper, paint and a variety of other crafting supplies.
While all materials are available for students to use, supplies are limited in large quantities. Students are asked to be mindful of the amount they use.
“So, everything, if it’s done in moderation, so that everybody can share, is available for people to use,” says Fedeler.
While the space can be used for fulfilling both work and school needs, it is also a space that can be used for recreation or relaxation from stress.
“We have one student who comes now, she’s a very crafty type of person. She doesn’t have much time to do that through her coursework,” says Fedeler. “Every once in a while, she’ll come in here and just make something and it helps with mental health.”
The K-Statt is open and available during the hours Vogel Library is open. Large groups can reserve the K-Statt space through the scheduling system. Any questions about K-Statt and its resources can be directed to Jule Fedeler.
