Wartburg Alliance is a student organization that provides support and acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals and education for allies. The organization encourages open discussions about diversity pertaining to gender and sexual orientation.
Alliance was established to create a safe space for students and staff on campus. Their overall focus is to help provide comfort and security for the LQBTQ+ community by sharing proper resources and education.
The president of Alliance, Juliana Corbert expresses the mission of Wartburg Alliance as a safe space for all students.
“Our main goal is to provide a safe space and provide like education and just general resources around LGBT resources,” says Corbert. “But also, just like creating community and… not discriminating on the basis of sexual creating awareness and community for queer students at Wartburg and their allies,” she shares.
Open-door and open lounge hours are every Thursday in Lohe classroom 137. These events and hours include games, music and quiet time for those to either study or catch up with peers.
Alliance often hosts events at least once a month these include movies and shows depicting or featuring LGBTQ+ actors, mental health, music education and LQBTQ+ panels.
Alongside their monthly events, Alliance hosts their annual drag show every March in Neumann auditorium. This performance is free for all individuals on campus and students are encouraged to attend.
Secretary Charles Houghton emphasizes that Alliance is a space that welcomes all.
“The good thing is that everybody is welcome,” says Houghton. “We have a lot of fun.”
