While most of campus is quiet at 7 a.m., a Wartburg student is already on the clock. They’re opening the library, sweeping the W or preparing to welcome visitors at admissions. Even after classes, practices and lifts, many student-athletes hang up their practice clothes for a work uniform. They might be starting a shift at the Den or the Zesty Orange. The roles students carry extend beyond a paycheck, shaping their academic experience, mental health and sense of belonging on campus.  

Across Wartburg’s campus, student employment is intertwined with everyday life. From admissions and athletics to dining services and residence life, on-campus jobs give students a way to make money as part of campus operations. Holding a job may sound unrealistic, maybe even impossible, but campus jobs work around extracurriculars and academics. Working on-campus is a great way to build relationships, gain experience and feel connected to the community.  

First-year journalism and communication major Ady Campos works in the admissions office two hours a week. As a Wartburg ambassador, Campos helps prepare acceptance letters, write thank-you cards and give tours to prospective students. 

“Campus jobs know that you’re a student,” she says. “They’re very relaxed and understanding.”  

 One of the main reasons she chose Wartburg was the ambassador who gave her a tour. For Campos, working in admissions gives her the chance to represent Wartburg and help shape someone else’s first impression. 

“I wanted to be the difference in future students,” Campos says.  

First-year volleyball player Gracie Hoskins has a schedule that never seems to slow down. Along with classes and athletics, Hoskins leads dance classes and activity sessions for young children each week in the W.  

“The best thing that has helped me balance everything is using my free time wisely,” Hoskins says. 

Employment on-campus can become part of one’s Wartburg identity. Though challenging, many students gain lessons, relationships and sense of purpose. 

 As Wartburg’s community continues to move through another busy semester, students continue to make their jobs a priority, keeping the campus life going.
